WHAT HAPPENED
Every cabinet was dreaming its little electric dream. Then the lights went out in one clean tug, and they have not come back on.
Don K. Eggshell, PhD, an egg-headed professor with a wild silver mane, a pair of very small spectacles and forty consecutive fiscal years of losing to heroes, has stopped losing. He walked to the wall and pulled out the master power strip.
“IF I CANNOT WIN… NOBODY PLAYS.”
Nine cabinets are dying. There is exactly one working socket at the far end of the building. Eight heroes are still inside with him, and all eight would like a word.
Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, a cabinet can only render one hero at a time.
So it is a relay. Run, jump, and do not stop. Reach a portal and keep going as whoever comes out the other side.
There is no art on disk and no audio on disk: every character, prop, background, hazard, song and sound effect is drawn or synthesized from code while you play.
Eight heroes share one render budget. You do not choose them. The portal chooses them, usually at the worst moment available.
“STANDARD PLUMBING PROCEDURE.”
Produces increasingly inappropriate plumbing tools.
“ALREADY THERE. WAITING.”
Arrives too early and waits for reality to catch up.
“THE RECEIPT FORETOLD THIS.”
Her sacred prophecy is printed on a faded supermarket receipt.
“LOW ON CYAN.”
Constantly reports low on cyan. Regardless of context.
“CHAPTER ONE: SHE ARRIVED.”
Narrates her own lunch. In the past tense.
“NOBODY REPORTED IT. I NOTICED.”
Maintains a case file on every object in this building.
“LIMBS WERE OUT OF BUDGET.”
The insurance form requires a limb count. He keeps writing “OPTIONAL.”
“BOY.”
Throws his axe majestically. Occasionally fails to catch it.
Three acts, nine machines, nine completely different-looking games, because the arcade could not afford one art style either.
The food court never closed. Nobody told it.
THE MANAGEMENT
“A GRIEVANCE INTENSIFIES.”
An egg-headed professor with a wild silver mane, a collar he can hide behind and a doctorate in statistics that has never once helped. Forty consecutive fiscal years of losing to heroes. Disputes damage by filing forms. Commutes by clown copter, which he would like on record was a deliberate aesthetic choice.
PAWN COUNTER
“PHYSICAL JURISDICTION RETAINED.”
A deceased pawn-shop clerk with a detachable head, still working the counter. The only entity left in the building with real hands. That turns out to matter more than anyone expected.
REPAIR COUNTER
“NEXT.”
Still on shift. Portions out repairs off a steam table that used to do nachos. She has not been relieved, the lunch rush is at noon, and the board above her has read NOW SERVING 0 for some years now.
FACILITIES
“DEEP CLEAN ENGAGED.”
A haunted vacuum cleaner. Cleans the floor, then the ceiling, then the inside of a CRT. Becomes a boss fight somewhere around the ceiling. It is the only antagonist in the game with a conscience. It apologises every time it hits you.
